I am thrilled to have the opportunity of teaching your child this year and I am thoroughly looking forward to all the exciting activities we have planned.

Starting school is a very important part of your child’s life and at Bynea Primary we believe that children thrive within a caring environment, where they feel appreciated and valued.

Our Aims:

  • As nursery is your child’s first experience of school, we aim to create a love of learning through making it a safe, nurturing place to play and learn.
  • To provide a rich and varied environment, that will stimulate your child’s curiosity and imagination both indoors and outdoors.
  • To develop literacy, numeracy and digital skills.
  • To develop independence.
  • To develop self-esteem through praise and encouragement.
  • To develop social skills.
  • To develop self-care skills.
  • To build links between home and school.
  • To prepare your child for full time education.
  • To make their first year of school fun.

Class Information

Uniform:

School uniform must be a green school polo shirt and sweatshirt/sweatshirt cardigan.  Please make sure all uniform has your child’s name clearly written on the labels and it would be extremely helpful if you could also label other items such as coats, water bottles, fruit, snack pots and lunch boxes, as the children are not always sure what belongs to them and we often find that certain items are quite popular.

Water Bottle:

All children need to bring a water bottle to school every day, which will be sent home for washing every night.  Welsh Government guidance dictates that water only is permitted in these bottles.  However, if your child brings a packed lunch to school you may send in a separate bottle with squash, etc to be drunk with their dinner.

Snacks:

All children are encouraged to bring in one piece of fruit that they can eat during break time as a snack.  Please could all grapes be cut in half lengthways as they can be a choking hazard.

Spare Clothes:

I would be very grateful if all children could bring in a change of clothes in case any accidents occur throughout the day.  These clothes can be brought into school in a carrier bag.

Stationary / Toys:

Children do not need to bring a pencil case / toys / jewellery, etc to school as all stationary items and toys are provided.  Please keep things sent into school to a minimum as small toys can easily get lost in amongst school equipment.

Parent Pay:

The school uses Parent Pay for school dinners and trips.

I hope you find this information useful and I will keep you updated if there are any changes.

This Autumn’s term theme will be ‘Splash’.

In the Splash project, your child will explore water, play and learn about the different forms and bodies of water. They will learn about freezing and melting and make ice lollies. They will investigate objects that float or sink and explore capacity.

Supporting your child at home

  • Talk about how you use water at home and why it is important to drink water throughout the day.
  • Find out about animals that live in water.
  • Have fun playing with water in the bath, in the rain,  a paddling pool or swimming pool.

This Spring term’s theme will be ‘Let’s Explore’.

We will be looking at the different seasons Winter and Spring!

Winter

In this project, your child will explore the seasonal changes that happen during winter. They will find out about the different weather associated with the winter season and explore changes that happen to water as it freezes. They will find out about what happens to plants and animals during cold weather and explore places in the world that are always cold and snowy, including the animals that live there.

Supporting your child at home

  • Go on a winter walk and talk about how the environment has changed since the summer months.
  • Put bird food out in the garden or on a window ledge and observe the birds that visit.
  • Leave water out in a shallow container overnight on a cold night and see if the water freezes.
  • If it snows, build a snowman, and take a photo of it to share with the rest of the class.
  • Share and discuss the Did you know? resource.

Spring

In the Signs of Spring project, your child will go on a walk to look for signs of Spring in the local area. They will learn about the changes that happen in Spring, including the weather and living things. Springtime festivals will also be explored.

Supporting your child at home

  • Go on a Spring walk and take photographs of the signs of Spring.
  • Make a weather diary to observe how the weather changes.
  • Visit a pond and look for signs of new life, such as ducklings and frogspawn. Visit again over time to observe changes.
  • Share and discuss the Did you know? resource.

How can you help?

Read to and with your child every day (10 minutes makes a big difference)

Practice writing their name (copying, overwriting or tracing)

Look for sounds and count things in your everyday situations, for example while out shopping or on a walk.

Help your child to become independent in dressing, undressing and toileting.

Label everything! Please put your child’s name on clothes, bags, shoes and anything else they bring into school.
