Welcome to our Reception Class

Croeso i Ddosbarth Derbyn

Our Team

Mr. G Stephens (Class Teacher)

Mrs. D. Willock

Mrs. L. Daly

In Reception Class we learn through planned, purposeful play using a mixture of adult directed and child initiated activities.  A big focus in Reception is being independent and being able to apply our learning in real life situations. We love being outside too. Anything you teach in an indoor classroom can be taught outside, often in ways that are more enjoyable.

Class Information

As you can imagine, a new classroom has new classroom rules and different teachers have different ways of organising their class. Therefore, below is a list of points to remember as your child is in my class.

• Children need to be in class and picked up at their designated place.

• All items of clothing, water bottles, lunch boxes and coats to be labelled clearly with your child’s name.

• Changes of clothes also must be kept in a separate bag, clearly labelled.

• If your child is on any medication, a form needs to be completed from the Reception Area/Website with your child’s name clearly stated on the box.

• Reading and Maths are really important to every child. I would like to encourage all parents to read stories, poems and nursery rhymes with their child as often as you can as this will develop their reading and writing skills. Simple games e.g. dominoes, snakes and ladders, skittles, counting rhymes, mental maths etc. will only benefit your child’s progress.

• If your child is on a reading book, these will be given out on a Friday and collected on the following Monday.

• If your child has been given any spare clothing (i.e. jumpers, socks, underwear, polo shirts) could you please wash them and return them to school as soon as possible.

I will be grateful for your continued support with these matters since it ensures effective organisation of our classroom.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

         Mr. G. Stephens

Dear Parent/Guardian,

In the Move It project, your child will participate in physical activities and learn about the importance of exercise, getting a good night’s sleep and eating a healthy balanced diet. They will learn about their likes/dislikes and that we can celebrate our differences. Your child will explore how they have grown and changed through the year and will celebrate their successes. They will reflect on what they have learned and how they have developed throughout the year. The project prepares your child for the next step of their learning as they move into their new classroom.

Supporting your child at home

  • Take a ball to a local park and have fun making up games that involve throwing, catching, kicking and bouncing the ball.
  • Try physical activities, such as bike riding, dancing, swimming, trampolining or ball games. Talk about the activities you enjoy the most.
  • Look at photographs from the year and talk about how they have changed and grown.
  • Encourage your child to talk about their favourite learning experiences from the year and their successes and achievements.

What Happens When I Fall asleep?

Dear parent/guardian,

Twinkle, twinkle, little star. Why are there stars in the sky at night? Does everyone go to bed at the same time? It’s time to find out more about night time.

This term, we’ll be entering the celestial world. We’ll listen carefully to a presentation about the patterns of the stars, and ask can ask questions about the universe. Snuggling up with comfy cushions and blankets, we’ll listen to bedtime stories and nursery rhymes. Zzz... Wide awake once more, we’ll learn about people and services that work at night, the Hubble Telescope and nocturnal animals. We’ll also find out more about how good bedtime routines can have a positive impact on our health, and take part in a series of bedtime challenges. Ready, steady, brush your teeth! In our mathematics lessons, we’ll play with the shape and size of star patterns, and create moons of different sizes out of sparkly play dough. Getting creative, we’ll make sock puppets out of old smelly socks and decorate however they like.

Help your child prepare for their project
The night is all right! Why not do some stargazing together after dark, either from your garden or, even better, a rural location with minimal light pollution? There are apps you can use on your phone to help you to identify stars and constellations! You could also keep a dream diary, noting down and comparing dreams with each other. Alternatively, talk to people in your family who have worked at night. What are the similarities and differences between working in the day compared to at night?

Thank you,

   Mr. G. Stephens

In the Sunshine and Sunflowers project your child will explore their local environment and see how it has changed throughout the year. They will grow flowers, fruit and vegetables in the garden area. They will learn how to care for plants and animals, identifying some different types. They will take part in outdoor learning activities and find out how to stay safe in the sun.

Supporting your child at home

  • Grow some quick growing plants together, such as salad leaves, radishes or cress.
  • Plan and go on a picnic.
  • Go on a local walk and talk about the changes that have happened to living things throughout the year.
  • Share and discuss the Did you know? resource below.
